This Couple Sold Everything They Had and Started a Skincare Brand From Their Caravan!
Quit your job, move into a van and start your dream business while on the road. Sounds too good to be true right? But, that's exactly what we did!
Both Myself (Mandy) and Lloyd (Business and life parter) were one time business owners prior to starting Hümbl Skincare, It was in our first businesses we learned a lot about ourselves, and what it takes to run and own a company. We made lots of mistakes, which helped us grow and realise EXACTLY what we wanted out of a business. The 9-5 grind really got us both feeling down, and we slowly started to see our dreams of travelling and seeing more of the world diminishing. We knew our next business venture had to be online and being a beauty therapist I had always dreamed of creating my own skincare line.
I've always had a passion for skincare. Having suffered from severe acne as a young girl, I initially studied the skin and skincare so I could better understand and personally treat my own issues. But I soon fell in love with sharing my knowledge and helping other people fix their skin while educating them on the right products to use.
Even though I had a lot of knowledge on the beauty side of things, I definitely needed a partner that would be savvy with numbers, logistics and the overall organisation and function of the business side. Having had my beauty therapy business prior, this was definitely a weak point for me and Lloyd being the smartest man I know, was the perfect fit. After studying everything there is to know about the e-commerce world and how to sell products online, we soon realised there would be a lot of preparation in the lead up to launching.
We hadn't originally planned to sell everything we had and put everything on the line, we wanted to do it part time and keep Lloyd's business running on the side. But with a few bad months of weather, Lloyd's business was becoming more of a stress than an asset and we decided to sell and put everything we had into growing our baby Hümbl Skincare.
A lot of people thought we were crazy, and I don't blame them because from the outside looking in, we would have looked like we had the perfect 9-5 life on the Gold Coast. But the thing about trading time for money is, you only have so many hours in a day to provide for your clients. We wanted something we could really grow and make 100% our own and with an online retail business we can provide value to our customers 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Hümbl was built on our core values of being a minimalist, humble person. Which Lloyd and I both are. I also wanted to speak to women who could relate to my own personal values when looking for a new product, for instance I prefer natural, vegan, cruelty free products that actually work. Aside from that the brand is also so much fun to be a part of, and I love how I can expand on my creative artistic side also.
The thing I love most about Hümbl is that it was built while we were on the road in our caravan from our computers. We didn't have much, but we enjoyed the struggle and the process of learning how to launch an e-commerce brand as a couple. To be honest, it's been an experience I wouldn't change for the world. I don't think there are many couples that can be confined to a caravan (with our big labrador named bear) for hours on end, working side by side and spending every second together and still be in love at the end of the day.
Obviously, as we've scaled the company we've had to move into a bigger space for products and packing, but it was a very Hümbl beginning and our name will always remind us where we came from, and what we have been through together.
Even though we only launched in October 2019, the continued growth we've experienced has been so exciting every step of the way and we cannot wait to see where we are at after 1 year of being in business.
